How to choose a replacement e-bike battery that fits

A replacement pack has to satisfy four separate conditions before it will work: the right voltage, a matching physical mount, the correct connector, and compatible battery management electronics.

Match the voltage first

Voltage is non-negotiable. A 36V motor and controller expect a 36V pack, and fitting a 48V battery can damage the controller or trip its protection. Confirm your system voltage from the original battery label or the motor documentation before looking at anything else.

Within the correct voltage you then have freedom over capacity. A higher amp-hour pack of the same voltage gives more range and will normally still work, provided it fits the mount and speaks the same language to the motor.

The mount and interface have to match

Modern e-bikes use an integrated pack that slides into a specific rail or channel in the frame or on a rack, with a keyed lock. Bosch PowerTube, Shimano in-tube and Yamaha in-frame packs each use their own housing, so a battery is only a candidate if it is built for that exact mount.

This is why cross-brand swaps rarely work even at the same voltage: a Shimano pack will not seat in a Bosch rail, and the electrical contacts are positioned differently. Start from your motor system, not from a generic voltage match.

Connector and pinout

Older hub-drive and conversion kits often use a discrete connector such as an XT60, XT90 or a barrel plug between the battery and controller. The connector type and the polarity of its pins must match. A physically identical plug wired with reversed polarity will damage the controller, so verify positive and negative before connecting an unbranded pack.

Integrated systems replace the loose connector with a multi-pin contact block inside the mount, which also carries the data lines the motor uses to authenticate and monitor the battery.

The battery has to talk to the motor

Branded mid-drive systems from Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha and Specialized use a communication link between the pack and the motor. The motor checks the battery's identity and reads its state of charge and temperature. A pack that does not present the expected data can be rejected, so a genuine or properly licensed replacement is usually required for these systems.

Simpler hub systems are more tolerant: the controller mainly needs the right voltage and enough current, so a compatible generic pack of the same voltage and connector will often run.
