E-bike battery connectors and mount types
How a battery attaches falls into two worlds: loose power connectors on conversion kits and hub bikes, and integrated frame mounts on branded mid-drive systems.
Loose connectors on conversion and hub kits
Conversion kits and many hub-drive bikes use a discrete plug between the pack and controller. Common types are the XT60 and XT90, which are rated for roughly 60 and 90 amps respectively, and Anderson Powerpole connectors. Barrel-style DC plugs also appear on lower-power packs.
With any of these, two things must match: the physical plug and the polarity. XT connectors are keyed so they only mate one way, but you must still confirm which pin is positive, because a pack wired opposite to the controller will cause damage on connection.
Integrated frame mounts
Branded systems abandon the loose plug for a housing that seats into the frame. Bosch PowerTube slides into a rail inside the down tube and locks with a key. Shimano and Yamaha use their own in-tube or in-frame channels. Each of these is a proprietary shape, so the pack must be built for that exact system.
The electrical contacts on an integrated mount are a fixed block that carries power and the data lines the motor uses. Because both the shape and the contact layout are specific to the system, integrated packs do not interchange between brands.
Rack and external mounts
Some bikes carry the pack on a rear rack or an external down-tube cradle. These use a sliding base plate with a lock and a set of spring contacts. Bosch PowerPack and several Shimano external packs work this way. The base plate and contact geometry are again system-specific, so an external Bosch pack fits a Bosch cradle and not another brand's.
When replacing an external pack, the cradle or base plate is often the part that defines fit, so identify the cradle model as well as the battery.
Why cross-brand swaps rarely work
Even where two brands both use 36 volts, the mount shape, the contact block position and the communication protocol differ. That combination means a battery is realistically only interchangeable within its own system family. Choosing by motor system rather than by voltage alone avoids buying a pack that cannot seat or connect.
