Yamaha Motor Company built the first mass-production electric-assist bicycle, the PAS, in 1993, making it a pioneer of the pedelec. Its current drive units are the PW series.

Yamaha supplies its own in-tube and rack batteries at 36 V nominal, and its drive units also appear rebadged on partner brands. Yamaha packs are keyed to the Yamaha drive and do not cross to Bosch or Shimano systems.
Published drive units include PW-X3 (Mid-drive rated 85 Nm); PW-ST (Mid-drive rated 70 Nm); PW-TE (Mid-drive rated 60 Nm); PW-S2 (Mid-drive rated 75 Nm).
